Pregnancy Skin Care

Skin changes in pregnancy - ugh! I’ve noticed a bit of chloasma (pregnancy mask) appearing and I’m wondering if there’s anything to help/prevent it from getting darker. Thank you!

Hi Meg,

Chloasma (also called melasma or the “pregnancy mask”) is a super common skin change during pregnancy! It’s caused by pregnancy hormones, which increase the production of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour).

For many people, chloasma gradually fades after pregnancy as hormone levels return to their pre-pregnancy state. In the meantime, some things that may help minimize it from becoming more noticeable include:

Sun protection: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen every day, and seek shade when possible.
Gentle skincare: Products containing vitamin C may help brighten the skin and are generally considered safe during pregnancy.
Talk to your pregnancy care provider: If you’re considering treatments/products marketed for melasma, discuss them with your care provider first, as some common ingredients are not recommended during pregnancy.

I hope this helps - I’m sure many are wondering the same thing :hugs:
